Mining is one of the most rewarding activities in Stardew Valley, providing players with valuable ores, precious gems, and essential crafting resources. While new farmers quickly discover the main cavern near Robin's carpenter shop, the game features multiple mining areas spread across its expanding world map. Locating each underground hub allows you to upgrade your tools, clear farm obstacles, and advance through critical story quests.
Finding the Main Mines in Pelican Town
The primary mining location in Pelican Town is situated in the northeastern area of the Mountain region, just north of the Carpenter's Shop and east of the tent. This multi-floor cave system becomes accessible on the fifth day of Spring during your first year after the debris clearing event occurs. Inside, adventurers can tackle 120 unique floors filled with stone, copper, iron, gold, and monsters.
Descending through this initial cavern unlocks elevator checkpoints every five levels to make returning easier on subsequent days. Reaching the deepest levels grants players the Skull Key, which serves as a vital item for unlocking late-game mining content.
Unlocking the Skull Cavern in the Calico Desert
Once you acquire the Skull Key and repair the Bus Stop through the Community Center or JojaMart, you gain access to the Calico Desert. The entrance to the Skull Cavern is located in the far northwestern corner of the desert map inside a small stone cave structure. Unlike the standard town mines, this hazardous subterranean location has no elevator system or floor limit.
Deep exploration within the Skull Cavern requires careful preparation, strong weaponry, and plenty of healing foods to survive dangerous creatures. In exchange, players can gather rare Iridium Ore and Prismatic Shards much more frequently than anywhere else in Pelican Town.
Exploring the Quarry Mine and Volcano Dungeon
Unlocking the Quarry by completing the Crafts Room bundles reveals another specialized mining location situated just north of the bridge. The Quarry Mine entrance sits inside a cave opening on the left side of the rocky region, hosting a single long floor packed with tough enemies. Reaching the end yields the Golden Scythe, which improves your harvesting efficiency across the farm.
For those traveling to Ginger Island via Willy's repaired boat, the Volcano Dungeon offers a fierce mining challenge at the northern edge of the island map. Traversing its ten randomized floors requires a Water Can to cross lava rivers and grants access to unique cinder shards alongside rare forge enhancements.
